Ironman WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Medical Symposium OCTOBER 20-24, 2024

Now in it’s 34th year, The Ironman® World Championship Medical Symposium is a non-profit, accredited annual five-day Continuing Medical Education event for medical professionals with an interest in sports medicine and treating endurance athletes at all levels. The symposium is the only authorized Ironman®sanctioned sports medicine conference.

Accreditation

 Up to 24 hours AAFP CME Credit-20 hours Didactic and up to 4 hours if you volunteer in the Ironman Medical Tent on race day.

Who Should Attend?

The conference provides CME for physicians from the fields of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, PM&R and Orthopedics as well as Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Physicians Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Exercise Scientists and others who care for athletes and/or patients who engage in regular athletic activity.

Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to present cutting-edge information in the areas of sports medicine, exercise science and common sports related injury and illness that family physicians can directly apply to the care of their active and athletic patients. At the conclusion of the course, participants will be invited to apply lessons learned to the care of athletes competing in the Ironman® World  Championships as volunteers in the Ironman® Medical tent. They will be allowed to volunteer for 4 hours in the tent under the direct supervision of the Ironman® Symposium Faculty. This 4-hour “mini-internship” allows the participant to see hands on application of the material learned in the course.

Symposium Management
This educational event is managed by Joseph Federl of CMX Travel & Meetings.  Joe has been  responsible for managing the symposium for over 30 years and  has over 30 years experience managing Continuing Medical Education ( CME) Conferences.  CMX Travel & Meetings manages all aspects of the symposium.

Symposium Chairman
Robert (Bob) Sallis, MD FACSM is the Symposium Chairman and responsible for content and the selection of all faculty.

Robert E. Sallis, M.D., FACSM, serves as the chairman for the Exercise is Medicine initiative and previously served as president (2007-08) of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Dr. Sallis received his Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy and his medical degree from Texas A&M University. He completed his residency in family medicine at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana, Calif., where he served as chief resident. He has served as the head team physician at Pomona College since 1988, and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in sports medicine. Dr. Sallis lectures and publishes extensively in the area of sports medicine and serves as chairman of the Science Advisory Committee to Governor Schwarzenegger’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He received the 2008 Community Leadership Award from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and the 2009 Leonardo da Vinci award for international leadership in sports medicine from the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine. Dr. Sallis currently serves as editor-in-chief of ACSM's clinical journal, Current Sports Medicine Reports.
